Amphibians of Kloof
Frogs are at the forefront of environmentalist’s minds these days as they seem to be reasonable indicators of the health of an ecosystem. Owing to the semi-aquatic life-cycle, and their semi-permeable skins, frogs are especially vulnerable to pollutants and other environmental stresses. Consequently frogs can be regarded as useful environmental bio-monitors, and may serve as an early-warning alarm system indicating changes in the environment and potential threats to other organisms, including humans. In a nutshell, lots of frogs equals a healthy ecosystem and no frogs equals a bad ecosystem.

Researchers have identified 160 species in Southern Africa and 24 species have been recorded in the Kloof Area and in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve – by contrast the entire United Kingdom only has 4! This however is no cause for complacency as having a wide variety is not a measure of a healthy eco-system.
